Customisation and innovation for your business from a digital file and the 3D revolution

What is 3D printing?

3D printing, also known as Rapid Prototyping or Additive Manufacturing, is the process of producing a physical three dimensional object from a digital file. It uses a material, known as filament, which is laid down in very thin successive layers sometimes hundreds or even thousands.

Who is using this process?

The popularity of 3D Printing has increased significantly over recent years as industries such as Medical, Educational and Manufacturing are realising the benefits, not least the cost and time saving potential for those who currently use expensive tooling and injection moulding processes.

Significantly, in 2013 a trial for 3D Printing initiative was introduced to a select number of schools and following its success was recently added, in September 2017, to the new Design and Technology curriculum.

Some of the key industries with greatest adoption of 3D Printing are: Architecture, Dental, Energy, Manufacturing, Automotive, Education, Energy and Retail.

What are the benefits?

SPEED - Compared to days or even weekly manufacturing turnaround times, 3D Printing can produce a complex design model within hours.

SINGLE STEP MANUFACTURE - With any changes being made digitally once the design is finalised the digital file is simply uploaded to the machine and printed in one step.

COSTS - The three main areas of saving and efficiencies are within machine operation costs, material and labour costs. 3D Printing for low volumes is much more cost effective compared to traditional manufacturing and for the production of prototypes or one-off functional parts can be significantly cheaper.

DESIGN CUSTOMISATION - 3D Printing allows complete customisation so for industries such as medical, where prosthetics are designed specifically for an individual or sports gear where an athlete needs a custom fit to gain an advantage, this technology can have huge benefits.
