As if the past year wasn’t already difficult enough due to COVID-19 and the following lockdown measures, 2020 was also rampant with ransomware attacks. Whilst this is due in large part to so many of us being forced to work remotely, experts are actually predicting the worst is yet to come. In fact, 2021 is predicted to see twice the number of data theft cases as last year, causing many to worry about whether their information and sensitive data are safe.
Whilst cyber-security risks such as malicious software aren’t exactly new, as the years go on, ransomware attacks are becoming progressively more advanced and threatening as technology has evolved. But how does it work?
How does Ransomware work?
Before a cyber-attack can happen, the criminal must first gain access to your computer system or network. To do this, they use something called an ‘attack vector’, which then allows them to access files and information. These can come in many forms including email attachments, social media messages and website pop-ups.
Whilst these attack vectors look real enough, once you’ve clicked on one, the ransomware will then encrypt your files by converting them into code and concealing it. Once encrypted, criminals often demand a ‘ransom’ in order to convert the code back into the files. These demands can range anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand. In fact, in some cases, ransoms have been in the millions.
How can I protect my data?
Whilst there is such a thing as cyber insurance, which can help protect and provide services to businesses from cyber risks, there are a handful of things you can do in order to protect yourself, including:
- Ensuring your software is up to date
- Practising caution when receiving suspicious emails
- Using strong passwords when creating logins
