As part of their goal to improve broadband for 80% of UK households by December 2026, Openreach recently announced their plans to add 10 more locations to their rollout plan. This would see 124,000 homes and businesses across the UK fitted with Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband, capable of multi-gigabit speeds.
What is Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband?
An ultra-fast alternative to the traditional Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN) that is being phased out, FTTP Broadband uses fibre optic cables to connect a user’s home or business to the ISP’s network. With average speeds 30 times faster than standard fibre, this high-speed internet connection allows for faster and more reliable internet access, seamless streaming, improved upload/download speeds and more.
To date, Openreach has rolled out the boosted broadband to more than 10 million premises, with 3 million of these being situated in extremely rural areas. Operating at a build rate of 62,000 premises per week (a significant increase compared to the 43,000 in May 2021), Openreach engineers are predicted to peak in efficiency at 75,000 premises.
The latest locations to be added to the rollout plan include exchanges all across the UK covering Scotland, Wales and England. These include:
