With each passing week, we are hearing increasing reports from BT Openreach on their plans to phase out copper-based broadband solutions in favour of their newer Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products. In fact, since our last update, Openreach has confirmed another 119 UK exchanges that have been added to their rollout plan in addition to the 10 exchanges we reported in May.
Arguably what is more confusing for households and businesses alike is the varying Stop Sell dates for wholesale line rental and legacy broadband. Whilst September 5th 2023 was initially marketed as the Nationwide Stop Sell date, as more exchanges get added to Openreach’s list, they are receiving their own unique Stop Sell dates. And that’s not the end of it either, as we’re expecting further exchange locations and unique dates to be announced post-September 2023.
Whilst these updates will help users understand when they will no longer be able to access broadband solutions using the PSTN and ISDN lines, it also highlights FTTP availability. This means that users could find themselves in limbo due to the increase in demand, unable to order traditional broadband or set up the newer SoGEA alternative.
How can I find out when my broadband will be switched off?
To ensure everyone is kept informed, Openreach has created a Stop Sell page with information on each of the unique Stop Sells across the different exchanges. To find out when your access to traditional broadband will end, download the exchange list within each tranche from the page and compare it to the table. Not sure where to begin? Get in touch with our Connectivity team to learn more about the options available to you.
When can I upgrade to full-fibre broadband?
Whilst some UK locations can already benefit from a fibre connection, others could be waiting until 2026 before they have access to faster broadband speeds. Openreach has created an interactive map on its website detailing its build plan progress, all you need to do is enter your postcode.
